SMART Programmable Balancer for Li-Ion/Li-FePO4 Packages
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Daly active balancer is used to equalize the voltages of individual cells, working in a single package.
New from DALY.
Although most BMSs are equipped with balancer circuits to compensate for minor voltage differences between cells, we often find that more powerful circuits are needed that, in addition to compensating for uneven cell wear and tear over the life of the battery, can compensate for differences due to manufacturing discrepancies, different initial state of charge or, in the case of previously used cells, their different histories.
The task of the additional balancer is to transfer energy from the stronger cells toward the weaker ones so that they are less stressed, resulting in a higher usable capacity of the pack and a slower rate of its natural loss.
Such a balancer also makes it possible to build a pack from cells that are not in an identical state of charge.
Although there are BMS on the market with built-in active balancer, but operating experience shows that these systems have a high failure rate.
Daly has solved this problem by developing a series of active balancers specifically designed to work with the Daly BMS. This means that both balancers, the active external one and the passive one in the BMS, can work simultaneously without interfering with each other.
Like the BMS Daly, the balancers are produced in a standard version – without the ability to view and set parameters, and in a SMART version, with full monitoring and the ability to set parameters.
The active balancer is a complement to the BMS. It does not replace it in any way.
Nevertheless, the Daly balancer can be used as a separate device, e.g. for the initial alignment of targets. The presence of a BMS is not required for its operation.
The SMART version allows communication (viewing, reading data and changing parameters) through various channels:
- Bluetooth module – included – viewing and programming via mobile app (Android, IOS)
- UART- required UART 6-PIN cable>USB
- RS485- RS485 cable required>USB
The system is supplied ready to work with standard parameters, corresponding to typical cells available on the market.
Using the communication methods described above, these parameters can be changed by the package designer to suit specific requirements, e.g. the balancing current or the process start threshold can be changed.
The balancer is connected to the package, just like the BMS. It is required to make two parallel leads from each cell, one for the BMS and the other for the balancer.
It comes complete with a cable for connecting individual cells and, in the case of the SMART version, with a BT module.
A new version of the application for BMS Smart is used for programming and parameter monitoring.
NOTE: it is necessary to purchase a balancer for a certain number of cells connected in series. For example, an 8S balancer is required for the LifePO4 8S pack. For the balancer, the type of cells (LI-FePO4, LI-Ion, etc.) does not matter. Only the number of targets is important.
